Welcome to the website of the 'Fighting Fourth'. The 4th Infantry Battalion was one of the first battalions of the 1st Australian Brigade, 1st Division, Australian Imperial Force, which was raised in New South Wales in August 1914.
The battalion gained a well deserved reputation as one of the finest fighting forces amongst the Allied Forces, seeing action in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Belgium.
The pages of the website will cover a brief history of the battalion, plus details of the men who served with it, and also photos of the men and the war graves of some of the fallen.
The inspiration behind this website is my Great Grandfather, David Thomas John, who was one of the original enlistees into the battalion. He served at Gallipoli and Pozieres, but was killed in action while leading a patrol at Mouquet Farm on 18 August 1916, leaving my Grandfather fatherless at three years old.
